Has not all the emphasis of the years, since Mary Lyon and her contemporaries first secured recognition for women in the direction of an education commensurate with that of men, been upon the identical ability and needs of each, regardless of sex?" The opportunities of equal educational advantages have been largely and generously opened and women have availed themselves so creditably that they have silenced forever the questions of ability to cope with men intellectually, and of filling successfully various professions, formerly closed to them. It has been a wonderful gain certainly. The pendulum always swings back, however, from the extreme to a golden mean of sane progress. President Burton of Smith College in his inaugural address, recently, called our attention to the results of recent psychological studies with the inevitable conclusion to be drawn from them which must effect our educational systems more generally in the future. "There are large common elements," he says, "in the education of men and women. Justice, integrity and veracity are not conditioned by sex. But a frank recognition of the common elements of our task only increases the necessity of a clear demonstration of the distinctive and unique field of the women's college. Experimental psychology in recent years has cast much light upon fundamental differences between boys and girls. With the dawn of adolesence still greater differences are apparent. The girl responds to social, artistic and intellectual demands, the boy delights in acts of physical prowess and manifests strong combative and aggressive tendencies.
